FASHION BLOGGER VIPXO EXPLAINS WHY THE OLYMPUS PEN IS ‘THE ONE’ FOR HER
Victoria Price, founder of VIPXO.co.uk, has just joined the #OlympusPENGeneration and her blog has never looked better. From mastering the perfect outfit shot, to her plans to take on YouTube, Victoria explains why the PEN should be an essential in every fashion blogger’s tool kit…
Why did you decide it was time for you to change cameras?
“I started blogging 6 years ago with a basic Fujifilm camera, which did the job, but it didn’t give me the clear, crisp photos I wanted.
“Later I saved up and invested in a Canon DSLR, which was recommended by a friend at the time. That DSLR had been with me ever since then, coming with me to events, holidays, days out, restaurants – you name it – but after a few years I was so over the bulkiness of the camera and lenses. It was a heavy kit!
“I needed to downsize, but I wanted to keep the quality. I was stuck, and then I came across the Olympus PEN last summer and it was everything I had been looking for.”
How did you first learn about the Olympus PEN?
“I’d been researching cameras for a little while, and created a list featuring the bloggers I loved and the cameras they used. I still don’t really know much about cameras, so I relied a lot on other bloggers to point me in the right direction and I read a lot of reviews.
“I knew it would be a big investment so I wanted to make sure I picked the right camera for me. When I looked at the pros and cons of different models, the PEN came out at the top of the list.”
Do you think that changing cameras is a big deal for a fashion blogger?
“Oh yes, absolutely! The images we share are so important to the success of our blogs and online life. We rely so much on our images to sell us, so it’s important to get it right. You get so used to using something, and knowing how it works – it’s a big risk trying something new. But in my case, I’m so glad I did, as it turned out to be the best thing I could have done for my blog.”
What’s your favourite thing about using a PEN now that you’ve got one?
“I think it’s got to be the remote shooting: it’s just so amazing that I don’t know how I lived without it! Relying on other people to take your [outfit] photos can sometimes be incredibly frustrating, but with this option I can do everything in my own time and pose until my heart’s content. I stick the PEN on my tripod and the world is my oyster.”
“I recently did a Bedtime Routine blog post where I used the remote shooting and hid my phone in my book; looking at the photos, you’d never know! Another thing which attracted me was the flip-out screen – I’ve been playing around with the idea of starting YouTube videos this year and I wanted a camera which would take me through that journey. It makes it a lot easier taking a decent selfie, too!”
What’s your top tip for taking a perfect #OOTD shot?
“I really like using the PEN’s 45mm lens: it gives me that really nice out-of-focus background which is great for shooting looks. If you like to share your outfits on Instagram straight from the PEN, then set your camera to shoot in a 1:1 frame. This will give you the perfect square – it’s saved me so much editing.”
Overall, are you happy with your PEN? What’s the best picture you’ve taken so far?
“Since I purchased [the PEN] it has completely changed my blogging life and made me fall back in love with it again. It’s made me want to create better content for my readers, and I have genuine excitement for sharing my photos. I can’t rave about this camera enough – it’s so easy to use that absolutely anyone could use it!”
“My favourite photo I’ve taken so far is one from my walking holiday in Cumbria at the start of February – I took this on my way up Scafell Pike which was a great personal challenge. It’s a nice reminder of what I achieved that day: I still don’t think my legs have recovered!”
