4 STYLE BLOGGERS ON MASTERING THE ART OF THE FLAT LAY
Here, four bloggers give us their top tips to create a perfect flat lay.
Julia Rebaudo of Stylonylon
‘My flat lays are usually colour-themed as I think it makes them more visually attractive and eye-catching. You can go either way: quite strict with just a few colours or really mix it up with loads that complement each other.
I love doing flat lays on a clean white background and have actually got a metre square white board that I style all my stuff on. Some bloggers prefer to arrange them on their bed, or I find the bath is a great place to shoot beauty products if you’ve got good natural light.
I always include something living, like flowers or a piece of fruit, too. Because photographing inanimate objects could be boring, it just makes posts feel more… alive!’
Hayley Carr of London Beauty Queen
‘I think the background for a flat lay is almost as important as the product itself. When I first started blogging six years ago, I had this awful blue Ikea table in my flat and I just used that as my background for everything.
As I’ve honed my photography skills I’ve found that plain backgrounds are best, as they don’t distort the colour or look of the product – particularly important if you’re shooting a fragrance.
I’m giving away my secrets now, but the ‘marble’ backdrop that I use most at the moment is actually a massive marble tile sample from a kitchen supplier – it lives in my office on the floor.’

‘To create the perfect ‘bag spill’ I always spend time choosing which items to include – they have to be the right colour palette and I plan and theme my Instagram grid on an app called VSCO cam to ensure that I don’t post similar photos.
My top tip would be to choose a pretty surface to shoot on. Before I invested in a marble coffee table, I bought a large sheet of stiff card and covered it in sticky-back plastic which had a marble effect to it. A great DIY if you don’t have a marble surface at home!’

‘With flat lays I get to say a lot more about myself than ‘this is me and my outfit’. I get to show people what I read, drink, what products I like… I love taking them.
I often shoot flat lays on my bed, or any other white background as it throws up the most beautiful light making all of the bits and pieces stand out perfectly.
Most of the shots I take of my cat, Lumi, are on my/her bed because the only time I can snap her is when she’s sleepy and snuggled up. She is the most strong-willed cat in the world – I wish bribery worked, believe me I’ve tried!’
