7 MAGNIFICENT REASONS WHY YOU NEED AN OLYMPUS PEN-F

by OLYMPUS

1. RICH DESIGN HERITAGE

While the OM-D series drew design elements from the legendary OM series of cameras, the new PEN-F takes its styling from many sources: including – of course – the OLYMPUS PEN-F half-frame film camera that was released back in 1963. The dial on the original Pen F is the inspiration for the Creative Dial on the front of the new OLYMPUS PEN-F – while the design of the on/off switch on the PEN-F comes from the OM series. What other history-led flourishes have you spotted?

2. LIGHTWEIGHT, ALL METAL BODY

The material used to make the main body of the PEN-F is magnesium alloy: this premium grade metal is both lightweight and durable, ensuring the camera will withstand those bumps and knocks that happen despite your best intentions.

Measuring just 124.8 x 72.1 x 37.3mm, the OLYMPUS PEN-F is small enough to be toted around with ease, but – crucially – is also big enough to feel like a proper camera in hand. It also only weighs only 373g – making it wonderfully lightweight.

3. CREATIVE DIAL

On the front of the PEN-F is that Creative Dial with four options: Mono, Art, Colour and CRT. This dial gives you access to a total of 28 different Art Filters, which allow you to capture anything from a cinematically dramatic black & white scene, right through to a soft, glowing, ethereal landscape. The Art Filters can also be previewed on the camera’s LCD or by using the viewfinder, so you can see exactly what you’re creating. No need to spend hours editing when you can snap gallery-worthy shots with the twist of a dial: oh, and the Art Filters also work in video, too!

I'm enjoying my Olympus Pen-F with M.Zuiko 17mm f/1.8 lens. An excellent combination for portrait, landscape, street and general photography. #olympus #olympuspenf #penf #olympus17mm

4. BRAND NEW SENSOR

It’s not just the design of the PEN-F that’s groundbreaking: inside the PEN-F is a brand new 20-megapixel Live MOS Micro Four Thirds sensor, giving this camera serious bragging rights. It has no low pass filter, ensuring that images have a maximum level of detail – and will provide you with OLYMPUS’ highest EVER output resolution.

5. IN-BUILT IMAGE STABILISATION

One of the things OLYMPUS is best known for is its cameras’ outstanding 5-axis image stabilisation, as seen in the pro-level OLYMPUS OM-D E-M1. Of course, the new PEN-F also benefits from this fantastic technology – giving picture-takers the chance to shoot handheld or at much slower shutter speeds and still come away with brilliant, sharp images. This stabilisation works by combatting up, down, left, right and rotational movements – and it’s built-in to the camera body, meaning it works with any lens you choose to use (so there’s no need to shell out for expensive optically¬-stabilised lenses).

6. EXCEPTIONAL EVF

OLYMPUS also built an electronic viewfinder into the PEN-F, meaning you can put the camera to your eye and see the shot before you in glorious detail. There’s a total of 2.36-million-dots that make up the image in the viewfinder with 100% field of view, and a magnification of 1.23x. There’s also a clever bit of tech called Adaptive Brightness Control, which intelligently adjusts the LCD in bright or low light conditions so the photographer can get the best possible viewing experience.

7. TOUCHSCREEN LCD

These days, no camera is complete without a decent LCD – and the PEN-F’s certainly doesn’t disappoint. The PEN-F’s 3-inch LCD is also a touchscreen, meaning you can use your fingertips to change the focus point, fire the shutter or zoom into your photos to check the finer details. It’s also a vari-angle, meaning it can be flipped out and tilted through a total of 270°: amazing for shooting from high and low vantage points and also creating video work.
