7 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE OLYMPUS TOUGH TG-4
THE OLYMPUS TG-4 IS AS TOUGH AS A COMPACT GETS
1) It can shoot 16-million-pixel images anywhere
The TOUGH TG-4 employs a 16-million-pixel, backside-illuminated CMOS sensor. This 1/2.3 in-type chip teams up with Olympus’s latest-generation TruePic VII image processor to provide a sensitivity range of ISO 100-6400 – perfect for shooting detail-rich images in bright sunlight on the beach, or where there’s naturally less light to be found when shooting beneath the surface of the water.
2) It has a super-bright zoom lens
The 4x optical zoom fitted to the TOUGH TG-4 offers a focal length that’s equivalent to 25-100mm in true 35mm terms. The real standout feature regarding the lens, however, is its fast maximum aperture, which allows users to shoot as fast as f/2 at its widest zoom setting. Low-light shots in light-starved environments have never been easier thanks to the camera’s aperture priority mode, which can be accessed directly via the mode dial at the rear.
3) Ultimate robustness for maximum protection
Where many cameras need to be enclosed in an expensive and cumbersome waterproof housing before they can be used underwater, the TOUGH TG-4 is waterproof to a depth of 15m straight out of the box. If this doesn’t sound like it’s deep enough for you, Olympus also produces the PT-056 underwater housing that enables the camera to be taken to worry-free depths of 45m.
It’s rugged build is not only designed to withstand water – it’s shockproof to a height of 2.1m, crushproof to a weight of 100kg and freezeproof down to -10°C to make it the ideal companion whether you’re shooting around the pool in summer or taking it out with you on the slopes during winter.
4) Raw support for enhanced post-processing control
As well as being able to shoot in the JPEG file format, the TG-4 offers the option to shoot in the versatile raw format. This will be well received by those wishing to edit their images and resolve maximum detail during their post-capture process. As well as being able to shoot in raw, it’s possible to shoot a JPEG simultaneously for those who’d like a sharing-friendly image file to work with.
5) Photographic aids for shooting underwater
Setting a camera up to get the best shots underwater can be an arduous task, but users of the TG-4 will find five underwater modes to assist in difficult underwater shooting environments. Added to this, there’s an additional 19 automatic scene modes to suit specific conditions to ensure your final result matches the scene before your very eyes.
6) Shoot and share instantly
With the TG-4’s Wi-Fi and OI.Share capability, it’s possible to send your images directly from the camera to a smartphone or tablet in a matter of seconds. Just download the free Olympus Image Share app from the App store for iOS devices or Google Play for Android and you’re good to go. You’ll even find a dedicated Wi-Fi button on the body to pair up your mobile device with the camera in quick time.
7) Expand the TG-4’s capabilities
Rugged and robust for most situations, there’s also the option to pimp the TG-4 to the max with an entire system of accessories that support it. Whether you fancy a Macro Light Guide for illuminating macro subjects evenly and counteracting camera shadow for truly spectacular shots, or experimenting with a fisheye converter for quirky underwater images, there’s an accessory available for every situation. If you’re worried about your stunning TG-4 picking up scratches along the way, the CSCH-122 silicon jacket or CSCH-121 neoprene case are designed to add another layer of protection.
