Having worked with and photographed the Peak District population of mountain hares for some time now, this year I was extremely keen to travel up to Scotland and photograph the hares found in the stunning and expansive Cairngorm National Park. I was eager to see if there were significant differences between the two populations, and also to photograph and observe them in true, winter conditions.

It’s important to accept that wildlife photography in the UK rewards patience. At the risk of making an obvious point: this ain’t Africa, where any guide with a jeep can get you within photographic distance of incredible megafauna. Wildlife photographers in the UK have a tough beat. Much of our wildlife – when it’s not making itself scarce for winter – is either shy, nocturnal, small or, often, the holy un-photographable trinity. Here’s how to find wildlife to photograph during the spring months.

We’ve been posting the images to our Facebook page throughout the run up to Christmas but here, for your enjoyment, is the chart in its entirety – plus our Christmas number one…

Winter can be a challenge for any wildlife photographer; many species leave the country seeking warmer climates or otherwise become far less active. This, coupled with a significantly shorter day, means it can be difficult to remain motivated when you’re failing to find or photograph anything. I’ve learnt the hard way how to deal with some of these challenges – so here are my five top tips for making the most of this festive season.

If you’re looking for a good reason to switch to mirrorless, here’s a fact that we suggest you never, ever lose sight of: buy a camera that takes great images without weighing you down so badly you never want to use it. Need more by the way of advice? Carry on reading…

Many people start taking photographs because they have something they want to capture and they enjoy that specific type of photography. Maybe you live near the sea and you’re blessed with beautiful seascape sunsets, or you live in the Scottish Highlands and have an abundance of wonderful wildlife. It’s quite easy to shoot a single subject without ever pushing yourself to try new challenges within your hobby.

As autumn progresses and the leaves start to fall from the trees, it can seem as though everything is dying off – albeit with some quite spectacular colours as it does so.
