With Olympus Ambassador Marcus Clackson
Picture the scene: 10 keen photographers grouped in a stylish restaurant in St. Margarets, hungry to learn all about the ins-and-outs of Food & Drink Photography. Enter Olympus Ambassador Marcus Clackson, ready to teach exactly that!
The event began with an overview of some basic Food photography tips, with Marcus explaining how – as with most types of photography – it’s all about lighting.
He shared many different tools and techniques for bringing light into your shots, and how by building a shot with light it really brings the food to life. We found out how it’s possible to use any lighting condition to our advantage, e.g recreating natural daylight in a dark basement setup.
While continuing to share some top tips, Marcus tethered his OM-D E-M1 Mark II to a screen for us all to see his shots as they were being taken. While shooting live, he shared some advice on composition, camera settings and clients.
During the demonstration, Marcus always used his last image to evaluate and inform the next one, adjusting camera settings and positioning of lights/props accordingly.
After the introduction, it was time for the attendees to get stuck in! The Crown’s talented chefs provided a selection of starters, mains, desserts and drinks that were laid out around the room in different lighting setups, including daylight, continuous lighting, and a flash setup.
Marcus made sure to spend some time with each of us, giving feedback and personalised advice on our images.
It was great to be joined by Olympus technical expert Piotr, who was on-hand throughout the event to answer any questions about the Olympus equipment.
Piotr not only brought along a huge selection of Olympus lenses, but also the brand new OM-D E-M1X, available for us to try out before it had even been released in the shops!
It may not surprise you to hear that photographing all that delicious looking food had made us very hungry! Luckily, The Crown prepared a delicious buffet lunch for us to feast on.
As the event came to a close, we had the chance to ask Marcus any questions about the topic. All-in-all it the event provided a great opportunity to get some first-hand experience shooting food & drink.
