GIFFORDS CIRCUS – A CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH THE OM-D E-M1 Mark II
With temperatures peaking at over 30˚C this was always going to be a hot ticket – so it was a fortunate 60 photographers who joined our OLYMPUS experts and Ambassadors for a day of E-M1 Mark II inspired fun at Oxford University Parks with the fabulous Giffords Circus.
The initial briefing and distribution of loan cameras and lenses was held in the rather warm Big Top, so it was kept as short as possible before the attendees split into three groups for smaller breakout sessions. These focused on the E-M1 Mark II cameras capabilities including High-speed performance and Pro Capture mode; a still life set-up macro masterclass lead by OLYMPUS Ambassador Marcus Clackson in ‘Circus Sauce’ the onsite restaurant; and a portraiture session featuring the circus’ clowns Tweedy, Bruno & Nelson, led by OLYMPUS Ambassador Gavin Hoey.
Then it was back inside the Big Top under the bright lights to put some of these new found skills to the test. We were treated to the virtuoso drumming of Andrew from the circus’ house band – low light, splashing water and challenging photographic conditions, followed by an entertaining fusion of juggling and breakdancing by Italian circus performer Dany Reyes – fast moving and intense.
For the finale was the incredible SOL Troupe from Cuba performed a breathtaking routine of tumbling, acrobatics and rope skills which had the house on their feet in rapturous applause …after they’d captured the routine for posterity on their OLYMPUS cameras of course!
With goody bags, tea, cake and some friendly camera chat to send us on our way we departed with memory cards full of extraordinary images and a little more understanding of the capabilities of the awesome OM-D E-M1 Mark II. Thanks again to Giffords Circus for their talented and hospitable performers plus the incredible setting for this great day of photographic fun.
