ONLINE EVENT: LEAVING MY COMFORT ZONE
Saturday 27th March @ 2:00pm - 3:00pm GMT
Join Olympus Ambassador Steve Gosling for an exclusive webinar and find out how the renowned photographer faired when he swapped landscapes for wildlife!
“In the past I have claimed that ‘if it breathes then I don’t photograph it’ which obviously ruled out people and wildlife photography. But in 2016 that all changed. I was an instructor on a workshop to South Georgia and Antarctica and my first encounter with seals and penguins in the wild was so magical I couldn’t resist photographing them. I didn’t instantly become a skilled wildlife photographer, but I really enjoyed the experience of turning my camera to something different.
So, when a photographer friend of mine from the US invited me to join him on a 10-day safari to Botswana in 2018 to photograph the wildlife I was keen to go and see what I could make of this photographic challenge. And I knew it would be challenging – photographing a subject unfamiliar to me (and it moved!), using techniques not commonly employed in landscape photography e.g. autofocus (I know, I’m old school!) and long telephoto photography, shooting handheld from a vehicle. The more I thought about it the more the nagging doubts crept into my head – would I be able to produce anything I was pleased with?; how would I cope with working out of my comfort zone? I feared returning home with hundreds of blurred photos of animals backsides.
But based on ‘if you don’t try, you won’t know’ I decided to go and give it my best shot (apologies for the pun). Even if I couldn’t deliver images that pleased me, I knew that witnessing the wildlife in their natural environment alone was worth the expense. And, additionally, the challenge would push my creativity and help my development as a photographer.”
In this zoom webinar Steve talks about the challenges he faced (from preparing for the trip to trying out new techniques whilst photographing from a truck on bumpy dirt tracks), how he tackled them and what he learnt from the experience. He will also talk about the creative process he employed – from the taking of the photographs to the processing of the final images. This 45-minute presentation is followed by a Q&A with him.
Did he get many out of focus photos of animal’s bums? You’ll just have to listen in to find out!
This webinar will be hosted live via Zoom. To reserve your place, please book your ticket below – we will send out joining instructions via email before the start of the event. Please note, in the case of multiple people watching from the same device, only one ticket needs to be booked.
